3 Practices to Stay Emotionally Fit During

Long-Term Stress or Illness
When life takes a turn—through chronic illness, ongoing stress, or unexpected setbacks—our emotional resilience is tested like never before. Physical pain and long-term stress don’t just impact our bodies; they weigh on our hearts, cloud our minds, and sometimes shake the very core of our spirit.
But what if emotional fitness could be your inner anchor, your lifeline to clarity and strength, even when everything outside of you feels uncertain?
Emotional fitness isn’t about pushing through or pretending to be okay. It’s about creating an inner environment where your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can breathe, heal, and strengthen—no matter what life throws your way. It’s the art of holding space for your truth while gently rewriting the way you respond, reflect and rise – no matter the storm.
Here are three powerful practices to help you stay emotionally fit, especially during long-term stress or illness.
1. Practice the Wisdom Pause
When the pressure builds, your nervous system goes into overdrive. You may notice racing thoughts, emotional outbursts, or an urge to shut down completely. That’s not weakness—it’s your survival brain doing its job to protect you. But emotional fitness invites you to do something different, even just for a few seconds, and consciously shifts your inner dialogue.
This is where the Wisdom Pause comes in, a powerful technique I developed as part of the From Me To You® App. This pause creates space between reaction and response. And in that space? Power. You start to take back the wheel from fear, anger, or despair.
It’s simple, but transformative:
Breathe deeply for a few seconds.
Ask yourself:
“What story am I attaching to this emotion?”
“Is this my present truth, or a past wound?”
“What might this emotion be trying to teach, reveal, or heal in me?”
These questions create a moment of mindfulness, space between the trigger and your response. And in that space, something powerful happens, you take back the wheel. You begin to respond from wisdom instead of reactivity.
💡 Practice Tip: Set a timer 3x/day for a “wisdom check-in.” It doesn’t take long—but the long-term emotional gains are immense.
2. Create an Emotional Outlet — Daily
Emotional pain doesn’t disappear when ignored, it accumulates. Without a healthy outlet, it turns inward, often showing up as anxiety, depression, brain fog, fatigue, or even physical symptoms. Just as your body needs rest, your emotions need release.
This is where a daily outlet becomes non-negotiable. It could be:
Journaling
Letter writing
Painting
Music
Prayer
Crying mindfully
Guided audio reflections
My personal favorite tool? The Wisdom Letter Writing Method™ —a 4-step process where you write a letter to yourself addressing your pain, wound or challenge. You don’t need to be a writer. All you need is a willingness to be honest and give your heart a voice – and in that voice, healing begins. Writing helps transform unspoken pain into insight, and insight into wisdom.
💡 Practice Tip: Choose a sacred time—maybe before bed or after your morning tea—and write freely for 10–15 minutes. No edits. No filters. Just truth. It’s not about being poetic. It’s about being real. You can find this method in the Program section.
3. Anchor Yourself in Micro-Moments of Meaning
When days become a blur and your body is tired, it’s easy to feel like life is slipping away from you. But here’s the thing, healing doesn’t only happen in big breakthroughs, it happens in micro-moments. Tiny pockets of meaning, presence and light.
These moments can look like:
A verse of music that moves your soul
A child’s giggle or the rustle of leaves
The first sip of tea, slowly savored
A hug that lingers one second longer
The warmth of sunlight on your face
These aren’t distractions from pain, they are anchors to aliveness. When you start noticing and naming them, you remind yourself that even in struggle, you are still here. Still feeling. Still worthy of joy. These moments don’t erase pain, but they create emotional oxygen in the middle of it. That’s why I created a practice called Daily Anchors.
👉 Each evening, write down 3 things that brought you joy, beauty, comfort, or connection that day. These don’t need to be grand moments. The smaller, the better. You're retraining your brain to notice hope.
💡 Practice Tip: Use the free tool of Journaling in the From Me To You® App. At the end of the week, re-read them. This becomes your evidence that life still whispers, even in hardship. Over time, you’ll notice how these micro-moments gently rewire your perspective, offering you strength you didn’t know you had.
Your Emotional Fitness Is Your Lifeline
You didn’t choose this path. But you do get to choose how you walk it.
Emotional fitness isn’t about being positive all the time. It’s not about avoiding breakdowns or pretending you are okay when you are not. It’s about being real, with yourself, your body, your emotions, and learning how to move through the hard with tenderness, truth and tools. And trusting that small, consistent practices can create profound inner shifts over time.
Let this be your reminder: You are not just surviving. You are becoming. And every pause you take, every honest word you write, every micro-moment you gather—it’s all part of your healing. And that healing? It doesn’t just stay with you. It ripples into the way you lead, love and live. So, start where you are. Begin with what you have. Your next breath, your next word, your next anchor. This is how we rise.
